Sean, Likely the original tube shields were painted the same color as the chassis - a copper/bronze shade. I have 2 Zeniths of that vintage and both have those shields - interestingly, one chassis appear to be plated while the other looks to be painted with a hammertone finish. Both appear to be completely original.

:Hello my zenith 6s157 tube shields are silver. Are these original or did Zenith have several types. The chassis looks like it is steel with copper plating. The steel underneath has surface rusted through the copper on top. So Im wondering if the original shields were the tan ones

Hi Watson,
I would expect a 5S228 to have tan shields. If it is early production, it would have been actually made in 1937, so your dating of the radio fits. Model 5S228 was made for the 1938 model year. Back then radio manufacturers had model years like cars do. The model year of Zeniths can be decoded from the number after the letter. Number 1 is for 1937, 2 for 1938, etc.. After the war, Zero is for 1946, 7 is for 1947, up to 9 for 1949 when they went to a different system. Having just two digit after the letter means it is a 1936 model year radio. It got this from the radiophile.com web site.

Sean, Better check it out more thoroughly before spending big dollars on new painted shields. Bill Grimm has a valid point and I stand corrected. An old dog can learn new tricks!!!! I was going by what my (similar vintage) Zeniths had (note to self - never 'assume' in radio collecting...
