Atwater Kent Model 185 capacitor questions
3/18/2008 7:33:00 PMPaul
Im in the process of replacing the paper caps in this, and noticed on the Schematic some of these are the INDUCTIVE type. Is it critical that I replace them with incuctive capacitors? I cant seen to find much information as to exactly what types of capacitors are incuctive. Thank You

Inductive simply means they are wound with one connection to the foil. Non-inductive caps, which Atwater Kent marked as "NI" have extended foil or multiple connections, and have better RF performance. Normally no one would mark a cap "inductive" and I'm surprised that AK did.

Incidentally if you are replacing the old capacitors entirely, I would be happy to have them, to cover up the replacements in my 185A.

:Thank you for the information, Alan. I just finished replacing the bad rubber wiring along with the filter caps that I re-stuffed and powered it up for the first time. I cant believe how nice it sounds. On radios this old I like to re-stuff the original capacitors so I need to keep those. I have alot of other old used capacitors. If you need a particular brand I can see if I have it for you.

Thanks, Paul

It should sound nice: look at the size of the console speaker they used, and the cabinet thickness. Who else would make a table-model cabinet a full inch thick?

Just thought I'd ask about the caps. I bought my 185A because it had a good original finish, but the seller had already "restored" the under-chassis portion so I had no choice about that.
