I have an old AC radio that I want to bring uop slowly on a variac. Is it best to remove all tubes first including the rectifier?

Nope…. that would not work out the power supply portion , and that is THE main reason for doing so…to gradual l l l l y
get a build up of B+ on the filtering caps and make an evaluation of what condition that they are in.

It is so easy to put in those filter caps that you should just do it. I neglected, delayed doing such a project once and woke up at 3 am in the morning with an odor filled house. And the caps are just a buck or two. My wife was not happy at all.

Also, I wouldn't bring up an AC set on the variac with just the rectifier installed. When you get up to full line voltage, the B+ will be quite a bit higher than normal, which isn't good for the filter caps.
