Where can I get a K80B ballast tube?
2/21/2008 10:25:17 PMGeorge
Well I have a problem. Recently got another Trav-ler Mod 431 but need a K80B ballast tube and quickly found out they have gone the way of the Dinosaur. Both 431's could be easily restored but I only have one K80B. What's a guy to do.

Use a capacitor in series with the filament string......or put a resistor inside of the ballast tube. www.tubesandmore.com sells nichrome resistance wire. If the ballast tube is metal, you can open it and repair it.

There may be other options. I'll see if I can think of any reasonable ones.

Oldradioparts.com looks like they still have them if you don't want to 'roll your own':

Another interesting site I stumbled on about ballast tubes:

Hi

That ballast drops 80 volts @ 300 ma and has a lamp tap. You can use a wirewound resistor but it will be hot, dissipating 24 watts. If a capacitor is used for replacement need protection for the dial lamp. A Zener diode will work.

For a 6.3 volt pilot lamp wire two 6.8 or 7.0 volt diodes back-to-back. Put the diodes in parallel with the pilot lamp. This is when the pilot lamp is run from AC, such as through a capacitor or resistor.

If the filament string is being fed from a diode (pulsating DC), use two 6.8 or 7.0 volt zener diodes wired both facing the same direction. Put them in parallel with the pilot lamp.

Old Radio Parts say they have 18 K80B's. Will be contacting them soon. If they are out of them I will give the other fixes a try. I guess I'll be working on Trav-lers this weekend. Thanks So Much, George.
