who made the best radios in your opinion

i wanted to take a poll of who in your opinions made the best radios for performance value. i look at ebay and certain brands always go for more money like zenith, bendix, stromburg carlson ect.

Carlos - I tend to think such questions are unresolvable and tend to result in unnecessary expentiture of bandwidth. Probably best to post your question here: http://antiqueradios.com/forums/

I'd have to agree with Doug. One of the nice features about Nostalgia Air is that the vast majority of topics are specifically related to "antique" electronics. ARF has lots of good stuff too but I've noticed recently there's more and more of this "poll" stuff going on. Some people obviously enjoy it as evidenced by pages and pages of responses to the polls and the same polls are often repeated.

I like that this question has gotten so little response.

I think it is because we only get the good radios. The bad ones all landed on the dump 30 years ago(along with some good ones, too).

Many of our radios are AA5 from similar schematics. As an engineer I find it fascinating to see how the technology advanced from the 20's through the 40's to arrive at an optimum of cost and performance expressed in AA5 radios.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Well, I have to admit that Carlos' question is much more relevant and appropriate than many of the "polls" that continually pop up on ARF. And, in any case, I was too blunt in my response to Carlos. (Interestingly, this forum, although unmoderated, seems to be more civil than ARF, and I regret being unnecessary blunt.)

The ARF "polls" that seem to be a waste, particularly when they are re-posted again and again, are like: What Is Your Favorite Radio? What Was Your First Radio? What's The Highest Price You Would Pay For A Radio? and, my all-time favorite, What Other Hobbies Do You Guys Have? (followed by 50 responses).

My main annoyance is that they go on seemingly forever, and once one finally winds down, somebody starts it all over again.

Meanwhile, ARF's response time is as slow a molasses in January. At least, here on Nostalgiaair we have plenty of bandwidth, at least for now.

I really don't mind off-topic posts (like this one maybe?) - it's those repeative ARF-type polls that tend to bug me after a while. But, I'll try to be more tolerant!

Being fairly new to this hobby, I'm sure that I've asked a few technical questions here and in other forums that some people may have found pretty rudimentary or have been covered before and I do appreciate the help and tolerance given to us newbies. What I guess happens with these ARF "polls" is that they are asked by newcomers who may not know if the topic was covered before.

I also know what you mean about ARF being slow - there are times when the site doesn't even come up.

Amen....Add my voice to that choir. Any technical questions by Newcomers Tony are more than welcome. We're all still learning no matter how long we've been around collecting or repair. By helping someone else you often do yourself a favor by learning something new in the process.

As for polls I'm kind of polled out on ARF and seek refuge over here sometimes.80)
I swear one guy posts what ever pops into his little noggin. He keeps going and going like the Energizer Bunny. Wish someone would steal his batteries. 80)

Ya, I thought you might Rene. He's cracking 9 posts a day since last October. Watch out Curt he's in your rearview mirror. 80).
My favourite posts are the "LOOK WHAT I FOUND"..............but didn't buy ones. It all kinda reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld when Kramer makes Jerry wear the fur coat to cover for Newman and the line that goes with it.

LOL about catching up to Curt! Maybe someone should tell the dude about Google...one of his most recent posts was "Who Was John Rider?" There are some great contributors at ARF (and here too) and many of them have the heart of a teacher to be able to answer the same stuff over and over, especially when the same topic is covered in another thread on the same page!

Both NA and ARF have their problems... NA could often benefit from a bit of moderator supervision. As far as a waste of bandwidth - any more posts on the "Koronette Stereo" (indeed, a hideously ugly waste of electronic components) would certainly rank up there with some of the worst threads on ARF.....

As a financial contributer to ARF (as well as here on Nostalgiaair), I don't mind criticizing either forum.

Richard, the owner of this site, tried to advise Alan, the owner of ARF, about how Alan might improve the response time of ARF. But his advice was not adopted.

Meanwhile, ARF moderators defend the site - "no problem here."

Matchbook covers, etc.

Meanwhile, ARF is slowing to a snail's pace.

i like all of them as long as they have tubes, actually some brands did have better quality parts than others and even the best names had their crappy models so i don't think going by brand name is the best way to choose a set of course this is just my opinion.butch

Butch,
Performance I suppose, is just like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" I've only been at this since retiring (6 yrs), and have done a few superhets and a couple TRFs (4 different brands), but until I've had the background of our more senior members, I won't declare a preference.

The Technical Material Corporation Out of New York and Canada . In my opinion they don't get enough credit, I would put them up against Collins in any day . Do a google search on TMC vintage radio and You will see what I mean . Andrew
