Have a radio that I am trying to identify.
It's in a wood case with a number on the rear of the chassis 45003506. There is no other information. All the capacitors are generic and the tubes are made buy different companies. It is a four tube chassis (35Z5, 12J7, 12K7, 50L6). One coil is mounted on top of the chassis near the tuner and a electrolytic can is mounted on the other side near the speaker. The resistors are not the normal carbon ones you find in most radios. Have pictures of the case and chassis in jpeg. Email me and I will send them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi All,
That is an interesting radio. It is AC/DC Tuned RF from around 1938. Most manufacturers had changed production to superheterodyne (IF cans included) by this time. Do the rest of you find this odd, or have I been in the 1950's FM radios too long.

All the Best,

Bill

Hi Fred,
What is the make of the 12J7 and 12K7. Those are the tubes most likely to be original. They may give a hint.
I don't see much indication of under chassis repairs, so an original tube may have survived.

They are both Tung-Sol

Thanks,

Hi Fred,
Tung-Sol sold to everyone.
I am thinking TrueTone/Western Auto. I looked at the radios from that time frame by Western Auto and found D730 (1938-39).
It uses tube set 6C6, 6D6, 25L6, and 25Z6. This correlates to your 12J7, 12K7, 50L6, and 35Z5. The differences are filament currents and tube basing. I think your radio is an octal update of the D730. Instead of the ballast tube you will have a 46 ohm 2 watt resistor.
You may find a direct hit under Wastern auto or Truetone. It may be younger than I originally estimated. 50L6GT tubes really were not available until 1939. It may have been built during the war.

Yes it works, but needs caps and wiring repairs.
