Big Boner!!!Re-capped this old jewel and replaced any bad resistors and wires one at a time. Got ready to fire it up so I put all new tubes in according to schematic. Turned it on for a second or two and noticed
a loud hum and that dial lamps were extremely bright so
I turned it off immediately. Found the cover to make sure I had right model and schematic, and that is when I noticed tube line up on bottom of box did not match schematic but model number did. Immediately replaced tubes as per radio decal but no luck...radio didn't even light up much less pull in a station. Back to step ONE and start over. Problem is that schematic trouble shooting guide uses tubes not on box decal. Box
decal shows 50a5 where schematic shows 50l6gt and 35z5gt where schematic 35l4. Really got to think on this one. Any ideas???

Hi Mike,
You might compare your schematic to the schematic for a 49-500. It uses the 50A5 output and 35Z5 rectifier.

Looks right but won't know til I check it out on the chassis and box. Still don't know why schematic and actual radio model don't agree. Thanks!!

Here's some good info. Depends on your number. I've worked on later 40's Philco and they "transitioned" ( a word?) lot's.

Hi Mike;
I have a Philco 48-200 for sale on E-bay right now. This set also had a 35Z5 in place of what the schematic showed was a 35Y4 and it had a 50A5 in place of what the schematic showed was a 50L6GT. The 35Z5 and the 50a5 where shown on the tube layout on the schematic label and I left them in the radio. When I got the radio it was dead. I sprayed contact cleaner into the on-off switch and turned it on and it has played perfectly ever since.

P.S. Page 18-40 Philco (Riders) mentions the following: "Code 121 of each of these three models (48-200, 48-200-I, 48-214) is identical to Code 125 of each model, with the following exceptions:
1. The type 35Y4 rectifier tube was replaced by a type 35Z5GT tube.
2. The type 50L6GT output tube was replaced by a type 50A5 tube.

Tracked the problem down to off/on/volume switch!! Tried cleaning it without taking it apart. No Luck. Reluctantly took it out and apart...totally shot. Now, where to find a new switch that will fit correctly?? I want the appearance to stay as original as possible.

Got the switch and installed it...now radio switches off and on but has little volume. The volume does come up some with the switch but is VERY low. I must have messed up something else such as a cap or resistor...back to the fog until I figure out this thing. Think I'll start with the audio circuit first??

Does anyone have a schematic for this radio? It's a code 121 where the 50L6 and 35Y4 were replaced by a 50A5 and 35Z5. This is where my lack of expertise really shows. The pins on these tubes do not seem to match each other and no changes were made to the schematic to reflect this. I don't think you can simply change the tubes and not the wiring, caps, etc. I can't really trouble shoot this radio, especially with my experience, with the schematics I have been able to find. Would appreciate any help on this. Radio works some, will bring in stations, but can't get the amount of volume as is normal even though it does adjust some.

2/26/2008 3:29:13 PMTonyJ
According to the schematic on this site, it mentions that the only difference between the code 121 and 125 models are the two tube changes you mentioned. That being said, the pinouts of the tubes don't match as you said and the pinout on the schematic for the 35Y4 looks wrong to me according to the tube data shown on this site. I think what I would do is to pencil in the appropriate pin numbers for the 35Z5 and 50A5 on the schematic and verify that's how the set is wired as a start and go from there. Additionally there are schematics at this site, but this one doesn't mention the code 121 change:

I would assume that all the caps and resistors do go to the correct 35Z5 and 50A5 pins based on it being a code 121 chassis, even though not shown as such on the schematic. That's why I suggested marking up a copy with the 'new' pin numbers next to the original ones. My opinion is that Philco should have had a supplemental schematic for the 121 chassis since the tubes don't appear to be direct replacements without wiring changes. It is confusing, and still I wonder why the pinout shown for the original 35Y4 doesn't look right to begin with...

Mike:

When I got home yesterday I had a package waiting for me with a Philco 51-932 code 122. Printed out the schematic and pulled the chassis to take a quick peek. My schematic also calls for a 35Z5 and 35L6 but the set acutally has a 35Y4 and 50A5 installed. I put the corresponding pin numbers for the different tube types on the print and indeed the tubes and components apparently have been wired accordingly for the substitutions. Hope that helps.

:Mike:It probably would have helped if I had started out right...BUT, after looking at all wiring and doing more research,it appears that there MAY be mistakes in the Sam's but Beitman's has the correct schematic for the code 121. Unfortunately, I don't have access to Beitman's at this time. Know where I can get the correct Beitman's schematic?
