I.F Xfrmr woes....
2/1/2008 10:54:16 PMCMcKenna
Hi All,

Tried to find my old post but couldn't. So quick background. Have a Knight Kit Star Roamer with bad I.F.s. Bottomed out, broken, jammed slugs and every attempt to get them out or loose has failed.

I would like to replace the I.F. xfrmrs in hopes of getting this running again but have no clue how to identify suitable replacements. Any help anyone can give me on how to identify replacements that may work will be my hero for a long time ;-)

C,
Can't recommend replacements but one last try at removing the slugs. You may have already tried this.
Put a drop or two of light machine oil (3 in 1 comes to mind) down into the core where the slugs are stuck, and let it cook for a few minutes, then use a standard metal hex wrench to rock the cores back and forth until loose. Make sure that the hex wrench only goes into 1 slug, otherwise the jam nut effect can't be overcome. Once loose, remove with a standard plastic tuning tool. Don't use acetone or lacquer thinner near the windings, otherwise it may soften the wax/Q-Dope holding them.

I suggest you remove each can and open it. Then, maybe, you can get at the cores a bit easier.

While apart you can try turning them or if that fails... try gluing on to the cores with a wood dowel or something that when dry you can easily back off the turns with.
If all else fails you can probably replace the entire IF can with any other ( 455kc.. if that's the freq) IF can that will fit the chassis holes.

Try looking around at the long list of suitable alternative IF cans at "play things of the past" at : www.oldradioparts.com

Had you found your old initial post....I had placed tips on the old transformer as well as the string of replacement tranformers numbers that would be compatible with your situation. You just need to check and see what numbers he still has available.

Hot linked referencing to your initial posting.....
(I hope...since its the very FIRST of the month and there may be some delay from archival spooling going on ) :
