AK 711J

My next project might be a monster AK711J. It is a 2 part chassis. I have had 3 local repairmen work on its sound to some success. The audio is not great especially with the music. The last fellow who had 45 years of repairwork worked on it 2 times and it got better but he refuses to try anymore. What do you men think can be done. The speaker had to be reconed and one fellow thought the spacing of the cone might be off enough to make it sound different. Thanks.

Del,
The quality of speaker restoration will certainly affect the sound reproduction, along many other electronic areas. Maybe try another speaker, if a good substitute is available.

The center of the cone terminates onto a fiber (cardboard) tube with a coil on it. The tube/coil is a moving sleeve over a metal "pole" If cone/sleeve is not centered, or if there is dirt between the pole and the sleeve, then distortion ESPECIALLY with music is the classic symptom. Either the re-coning went wrong somehow (and things are not centered), the code later became wet, or dirt was introduced somewhere in the proceedings. The guy with 45 years experience should be able to tell you if it's the speaker (he can substitute another good one as a test), or whether the problem is in the electronics somewhere. You need a speaker substitution.

Hi

That's a very good radio with push-pull 2A3 tubes driven by push-pull 56's.

After you try another speaker measure voltage on the 2A3's, 56's and 55 audio tubes. It's possible one side of the push-pull circuit isn't operating? You will still hear sound but may be distorted.

Thanks for the ideas to try. I do not have another speaker for it. Might have to get one on ebay. This old radio was at a rummage sale. It had been painted brown except for the front where the knobs and dial are located. I was able to strip it without harming the front. The radio is in a six leg case and turned out very good.
