Dial glass question

Have a Delco R-1235 and the numbers on the dial scale are in bad shape as I think someone had the radio apart and tried to clean it. I've gotten all the old numbers cleaned off and wondered if anyone has repainted these and what you used to do it. The glass is recessed where the numbers and decorative band are so my thought was to get paint into the recess and carefully use a razor to clean the surrounding area after it dries. There are also gold decorative bands that did not flake off and still look nice. Wonder why those are still intact...thanks!

The gold will adhere better to glass due to its chemical make up.

Try finding glass paint at Ben Franklin Craft stores. It works well. You would be able to apply it into the cavity. The dial has to be cleaned thoroughly. I recommend lacquer thinner on a Q Tip, then let it dry well before applying paint (about 1/2 hour).

Thanks for the tip - I'm not sure if there are any Ben Franklins around us, but we have a few Michaels craft stores that probably has something similar.

Hobby shops that carry Testors paints are good. For recesses, you can just drizzle some into the recess. Once it is THOROUGHLY dry, you can polish the excess away with either a fine polish or fine steel wool. If the paint isn't thoroughly dry, bits of polish or steel wool will get caught in the paint.

For flat glass you will have to build a silk screen (or have a very good hand...preferrably with a fountain pen....getting fountain pens to handle paint can be difficult, depending on the consistency). The only thing I would tackle would be the silk screen, or perhaps some very light touch-ups with the pen. My hand isn't at all steady.
