Can you soften hardened cloth transformer leads?

I am starting to work on an Airline Console model
62-269.
I am noticing that the leads from the transformer are
very hard and if I try to bend them at all they might
crack or break.
Is there anything to apply that would soften this cloth wiring? I have stuff called rubber rejuvenator or something like that. Would this not be a good thing to
put on cloth wiring? Any suggestions other than do not disturb?

If it were me, I would go down to the Radio Shack and get some heat-shrink tubing. A good hair dryer will do to shrink it over the wiring.

The cloth is saturated with varnish or lacquer. You can soften the varnish or lacquer with acetone. Be very careful not to get acetone into the transformer or onto painted surfaces, plastic, etc. If you have some finness about you, you won't have to worry about the exaggerated warnings others on here might give you.

If the wires have cloth over rubber insulation, you are better off heat shrinking the wire, or replacing the wire all together with some attractive new cloth wire from AES or Radio Daze (heat shrink connections inside of the transformer). You can try acetone on the wire. It may work for you. It may make a mess out of the rubber, though. Give it a try. You can always heat shrink or change the wiring later.

I will try the acetone trick and see if it helps
these wires. They look in good shape except one has
very slight cracking so maybe this will loosen them up a little. When I get a little hardened and ready to crack I try a little India Pale Ale and/or Newcastle and it seems to do the trick! :O) Thanks Thomas.
