Zenith AM-FM alignment question
1/18/2008 7:51:17 PMMmakazoo
Hi, all: I am looking at the instructions for my Zenith model Y832E regarding the FM alignment. Several of the steps indicate "adjust for maximum deflection". What exactly does this mean? Mark from Kalamazoo

Mark,
Probably referring to the meter deflection on a VTVM, where absolute value is not important. May be referring to AM IF alignment where a peak of the narrow IF response curve is correct, but for FM IF alignment a sweep gen is req'd to shape/tune the response curve to the wider req'ts of FM IF. I've never tried it, but suspect using a VTVM and peaking an FM IF for max deflection, would lose most of the information, severe distortion and drive the AGC circuit crazy.

Marv: The alignment instructions include both using an AM signal generator/VTVM and FM signal generator/oscilloscope. It's in the section for using an AM signal generator that includes the adjust or maximum deflection comment. Mark from Kalamazoo

Mark,
Some of the earlier/cheaper FM sig gens had an output for the horiz sweep on the scope, and when used in conjunction, created a sweep gen sys. for FM IF alignment. Later on, spectrum analyzers came into the spotlight, and provided both the scope and sweep functions. I loved it (Marconi 2350???) with digital display. No blooming or phosphor burns.
