poor reception on the high end of the dial
1/11/2008 8:36:15 AMPaul
Hi guys. I've just recapped a Motorola 58-FRC last night. It is working, and the signal is loud and clear on the low end to the middle of the dial, but not the high end. I have a signal generator right next to the darn thing broadcasting at 1610 and can barely hear it. I've gone through the alignment procedure which really did improve things on the low end, but not all the way across the dial. Any suggestions?

Hi Paul

Antenna trimmer mounted on your loop should be adjusted while listening to high end of the band. Did someone change antenna coils?

Norm,

I did that too, at 1400Kc per the instrcutions. It's one of those Motorola Aero Vane units attached to the inside of the back cover. The trimmer is accessible through a hole when the back cover is in place. I dunno....the low end of the dial sounds really strong, although I do need to find a new speaker...it's shot.

Did the trimmer seem to make a difference when adjusted at 1400? There should be a peak in the signal unless there is a problem with the antenna coil. Does it look like any turns have been removed. Any chance the plug isn't in right? Broken antenna wire?

: Norm,

Although ajusting it didn't seem to make a difference, if I unplug the 4-pin connector from the back of the cassis I lose ALL reception. It's one of those flat oval-shaped units. Do you possibly think I could have a problem with the loop trimmer?

Loop trimmer not likely to have a problem. Could a wire on the coil be broken? Has any turns been taken off. The trimmer will peak up stations at high end of the band if it's working right.
