1946 Midland M6B Slug Tuner Problem
1/8/2008 9:10:23 PMGeorge
Hi, I recently recapped, put several resistors and tubes in this set. It plays fine for a good while then starts to get static. If you move the tuner it goes away for a while. I cleaned the rods but not inside the ? (things the two rods go into). I think it is probably dirty inside the slug tuning mechanism. Does anybody have any suggestion on how to correct this. I'm pretty new at this and really not familiar with slug tuners. Thanks George.

Hi, found it, loose wire. Thanks, George

The things the slugs go into are coils. The slugs, if powdered iron, increase inductance of the coils, which lowers the frequency at which their associated tank circuits resonate at.

Random 'static' (crackling noises) can also be caused by a failing capacitor, usually in a high potential or audio circuit, though sometimes in other circuits as well. Coils are not usually a source for static (rarely). Volume controls can be. Tubes can sometimes be....as well as sockets and grid cap connections (rusty).
