question on how to read tube diagrams
1/7/2008 5:06:43 PMwade Epler
Hey folks-

My radio has a 6u5 eyeball tube in it, and it appears the previous owner grabbed the wiring harness, took a hard pull, and ripped every wire out of the socket. I've replaced the wiring, and now I just really need to know where each wire goes to each pin on the tube. I see the 6u5 tube diagram on this site, but I'm not sure of how to orient the tube in order to know the pin order-do I face the pins out towards me, or flip it around and treat my monitor as a tube socket? This is for a zenith 8s463 by the way, and I've recorded the original color codes for the wires leading up to the socket if that is of any help.

thanks,

Wade

usually the pin diagrams are bottom views of the tube (i.e. pins facing you)

Hi

A little to add.. Look at the bottom of the tube with large pins facing you. The large pin on the left in #1. Count clockwise until you get to the other large pin, #6.

Pin #1 and #6 are filaments. Pin #2 is plate. This one will have a 1 meg resistor connecting to pin #4. Pin #3 is grid. It goes to the AVC line. Pin #4 is target. Tied to B+, around 250 volts. Pin #5 is cathode, usually grounded.

Okay, I've wired it up, and hey, it seems that that old 6u5 still has some life left in it! Problem is-I'm getting a negative image on it (the normally dark tuning wedge is green surrounded by a dark field)-I'm assuming two leads are switched around? Any ideas? Otherwise, the radio is running great-just fresh from recapping and is badly in need of alignment...
