Seems like your are not sure if it's bakelite or plastic? Like Peter mentioned you can strip bakelite with oven cleaner or other chemicals.
Plastic is not the same. Many chemicals destroy plastic. Before taking off the paint try a little of the remover inside your cabinet to be sure there isn't any damage.

:If it is painted Bakelite, you can strip it easily with Easy-Off oven cleaner... Blue can is mild lemon scented and will work well the Yellow can classic stuff is stronger if needed.
