Silvertone 20

Hey everyone, I have a silvertone mod. 20 and the cabinet is in a bad way. Black shining thru the color in places. Like it is paint chipped. I can't tell if it is bakelite or heavy plastic, what is the way to prep it for painting. Thanks John

If it is painted Bakelite, you can strip it easily with Easy-Off oven cleaner... Blue can is mild lemon scented and will work well the Yellow can classic stuff is stronger if needed.

Then... if it was painted from the factory you may find the underlying Bakelite is in good shape and shiny.
So you may want to leave it natural or repaint.

Hi John

Seems like your are not sure if it's bakelite or plastic? Like Peter mentioned you can strip bakelite with oven cleaner or other chemicals.

Plastic is not the same. Many chemicals destroy plastic. Before taking off the paint try a little of the remover inside your cabinet to be sure there isn't any damage.
