Polishing a dull spot
12/20/2007 5:41:13 PMChristopher
I have just finished striping the factory paint off a Crosley Dashboard radio. The Bakelite is jet black and pristine, however there is a dull spot about an inch and one half round where someone sanded it prior to painting. Is there a way to polish the dull spot and bring it up to the same shiny condition as the rest of the case?

Thanks: Christopher

There are several ways to work with your problem. I prefer to use the very available finishes for auto buffs (pun intended), and use wet sandpaper, rubbing compound, polishing compound, and finally car wax to get the surface as shiny as a mirror. You may, however, find the spot you polished looks so much better than the rest of the radio, that you will do the thing all over.

Christopher,
Try good old Brasso brass polish. I have had amazing results with it on bakelite. You can just polish the dull spot.

Christopher,
I've had good luck using an electric buffing wheel and a fine abrasive like jeweler's rouge. It's not too difficult to blend in the rough areas that you describe.

A warning about electrics and plastic:
Fine for Bakelite, but a big NO NO for soft plastics. Do them by hand.

Lewis,
I won't ask you how you know :)... but yes - for Bakelite only. If in doubt, test a small area on the bottom before jumping in with both feet.

I'll bet you know *exactly* how I know. (;>)
