Silvertone Tombstone battery set

Thanks to help from the forum I was able to get my set from the 30s to play. The only problem is when the volume is turned up, the sound distorts and gets raspy. I have shielded the tubes well, and re-capped the set completely. Any sugestions?

Hi Dave

Be sure voltages are high enough.

If voltages are proper on the output tube that may be all you can get out of the radio. These radios were made with low output power, 200mw, to save on battery life.

The Radiola 18, I have has a special power unit for operation on 105 to 125 volts, 25 to 40 cycles. The question I have is , will it work at 120 Vac 60 cycles. Will there be any problems. Thank you for any help.

Hi,
It "should work". The transformer has more copper than onewound for 60 cycles (as well as potentially a different iron alloy for the core- but not likely). Your operating voltages will likely be lower, and performance might not be as good, but it "should" work acceptably on moderate and strong signals..
