foam speaker suspension

On a side note, I saw the mentioning of cone distortion at loud volumes, when foam is in use around the edge. As we are finding, the foam suspended cones do sound really nice in our old radios. However, those cones are actually designed to work in an enclosed, possibly tuned, cabinet. A cushion of air prevents cone distortion, as well as cone over-travel (in most cases).

Thomas:
If I understand speakers correctly, the tuned cabinet keeps the speaker from resonating at some frequency, so the cone never goes into wild oscillations at a particular frequency. I've heard that you do not march soldiers in step across a bridge, as the resonance can collapse the bridge. i think that is what you are saying, and I agree with you.
