Replacing Stromberg-Carlson tuning gears
11/5/2007 11:43:17 AMDavid
I have several 1925-27 Stromberg - Carlson sets (models 501, 523, 601, 633) that use pot metal tuning gears, which have gone the way of all pot metal, swelling, warping and cracking. Several collectors have told me that there are commercially available gears that will work as a direct replacement - does anyone have a specific manufacturer and part number? Specs are: spur gear, 5" diameter, 1/4" thick, 160 teeth, 5/16" center bore, retained with a set screw. Thanks for your help.

David: I had one of those sets similiarly afflicted and eventually sold it because of the gears. A good machine shop could make suitable replacements out of brass ($$$). There was a big Stromberg collector I met at AWA several years ago who was planning to have some made for himself and a few extra for sale (also $$$). This is old info but you might try to look him up: John M. England, Jr., P.O. Box 59136, Schaumburg, IL 60159 Tel: (847)823-5287. Hope this helps. Watson

I just installed two gears in a SC model 633 that I had laser cut by a company that has a gear cutting program. The original gears were so bad that I guesssed wrong on the size. I tried again and the second try worked. The new gears are plastic (acrylic)and the precision is incredible. The price, including postage was $34.00. Email or call me (817-312-8761) and I can give you the details. Larry Lindsey
