Would like some advice on best way to clean up the black covering on this set. There are no tears or marks on the case, just looks dull. Thanks.

I've used black shoe/boot polish to gloss up the case on mine. The brass has faded somewhat though. Has anyone tried these home electro-plating kits? Have the results been satisfactory? -Walt.

Walt,
I've used the brass and copper plating kits from AES with fair to moderate success. Unfortunately, all residue/rust etc must be removed down to the base metal, otherwise plating will not adhere correctly. I'm sure there are many leather care products available at auto parts stores, as well as leather shops or shoe repair shops.

I've used Hand cleaner to clean it and then shoe polish to blacken it. This helped but don't know if it is the best way. I need a new cover for one of mine, does anyone know where I could find the material? Thanks, John

Try www.alanjesperson.com for the vinyl replacement material by the yard for tube-type Transoceanic cabinets. Although I've never done one, cutting a pattern from the old one,if possible, would be the best practice. Forming and gluing the material at the compound corners could be difficult. I don't know what instructions are provided.Maybe someone who has done car vinyl top replacement would have the touch?

Des,

I've done fabric-covered phonographs using semigloss black spray paint with good results. Trim all loose threads and glue down any loose edges first. If the fabric is not faded or scuffed, you could also try a clear acrylic spray after a thorough cleaning of the cabinet to remove surface dirt.
