Was 6X5 an upgarde from 5W4?
10/3/2007 11:52:20 PMPeter G. Balazsy
I am restoring a very interesting old Gilfillan 5G-s with a special looking wood cabinet. ( I put up pix after I redo the wood)
http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/583/M0008583.pdf

But I noticed that the chassis was all bollixed up with odd parts. The last repairs were from way long ago mostly because the caps were all kinda old too.

But the real strange part was that the rectifier was shown as 5W4 but there is a 6X5GT in here. The power transformer looks like it's been changed too. However the wires from the high voltage to the rectifier tube socket seem very old or almost original aged.
So it made me think if maybe this 6x5 was a factory upgrade. Is that possible?
Did the 6X5GT come out when these radios were made in 1941?
It is rated for 70ma so that seems sufficient for a 5 tube set.
Do some of you old-timers remember if this was a popular upgrade since it doesn't require a 5 volt winding?

I also see that the print states a 480kc IF... yet there is a replacement 1st IF (Meissner 16-6658 )
That is a 456kc "peak" IF according to the Meissner catalog.
I tried aligning at both 480kc and 456kc and it seems to be able to tune easily either way.

My question is: What ill effects are there if the original local oscillator was really wound to work best at carrier+480kc ... and if I re-tune the IFs to peak at 456kc... what effects will I see?
Will it be a tracking problem or what?

Norm I'm sure you have some words of wisdom to chime-in with on this?

Peter,

In these old radios you may find just about anything is possible. If the transformer in there now doesn't have a 5 volt winding, it is possible the radioman used what he had (a transformer with only a 6 volt winding) and made changes (added a 6X5) to get the radio working again.
