M55HG Ballast Tube

Can this tube be replace with caps? it has a 47 pilot light. It is a Meteor 7213. The tube might be good I have no way to test it. Was going to try and recap chassis. Don't know if its worth it, everything looks good but unit hums.

George, you are refering to a Sears 7213?

Ballast tube is effectively a wire wound resistor in series with tube filaments. If tubes light in your radio the ballast is good.

M55HG drops 55 volts @ 300 ma. If open it can be replaced by a wire wound resistor. A capacitor will also work which would stay cool.

Here is information on replacing ballasts with other components:

I would want to go with the cap. To dissipate .3 amps at 55 volts you are talking 16.5 watts.

The best way to test a ballast tube is with your eyes. Pull the chassis out of your radio and fire it up on the bench. If the piliot light works and your tube filiments give off a nice orange red glow, your ballast tube is fine.

Thank You All So Much. I'm new at this stuff and have one recap job under my belt. Old tube Radio's have become my passion. I'm hooked!!!
