WHEN REPLACING 455KHZ IF TRANSFORMERS,DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THE REPLACEMENT TRANSFORMER IS LARGER OR SMALLER IN DIMENSIONAL SIZE THAN THE ONE BEING REPLACED?

I don't see where the size will make any operational difference as long as they are approximately the same
(you wouldn't want to use a small transistor radio IF as the current load would be too much for the coil) .. however I do feel that you should try and find as close a replacement as possible to try and keep the set looking "original" as this could affect the value

Some time back, I was repairing a Silvertone console and found that one of the IF primarys was open. I purchased a small 455 from
Antique Radio Supply and wired it inside the original much larger can. You need to do the alignment before putting on the larger,
original can while you still have access to the new IF. Since this is a can within a can, so to speak, the alignment is not affected
by the addition of the original can. The appearance is, in my case, original and it works fine. You may also be able to mount the
small can under the chassis if you have room and leave the large can in place.

I will like yo know how an IF Amplifier Stage in a radio works, with a general discription of it. Or where can can I find additional information.
