Weak sound

I have two radios made in Japan and sold in Canada.
1. Rincan no model# looks late 50's
2. Supersonic A-F no model# looks early 60's

both are tube/capsitor type radios both are AM-FM.Sound is weak on both until you hold the stick antena, then it kicks in. Any help with the problem is appreciated.

Hi,
There are a couple of possibilities, or combinations.

The easiest one to check are 1) clean up the tuning condensor so that the rolling contacts are clean. 2) check for an open antenna coil in the RF circuit/first stage. 3) check the tube in your first stage to see if it is in good shape. 4) You may need an alignment. When you are touching the loopstick, or close to it, a couple of things are happening, but most importantly- You are a fairly effective antenna, and you are coupling capacitively to the radio.

Other things to check are the output capacitor on the second grid of the first stage. Check for an open capacitor in the AVC circuit.
