Radio Identification - HELP!!
9/22/2007 4:15:52 PMBill J.
I picked up a radio factory built into a small bedside chest of drawers but there are no identifying labels on the chassis. The dial plate is embossed "Bambergers" - which I believe is / was a department store and I doubt they didn't make it. So, I need some help identifying this radio and - hopefully - finding a schematic. There are 7 tubes and the lineup is : 80, 47, 27, 55 and 58 (x3). Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Possibly French Delval Cepadyne (President) or Tecalemit model 34A. Check Radiomuseum.org and do a search by tubes.

Try Grigsby-Grunow (Majestic models 310A and 310B):

and:

Same tube line-up except the 27 is replaced by a 56 (direct substitute). If it's not exact, it maybe close enough to work with.

Thanks guys, but - first off - it's not French. Bambergers was an American department store chain headquartered in New Jersey. And , it really doesn't have the physical layout of the Grigsby-Grunows listed. The osc, RF and 1st detector are all 58 (no 56 in this section). Any other suggestions are welcomed...

Is there anything stamped into the chassis or any type of plate on the chassis?
Unless somebody knows who may have made radios for them, this might be hopeless.

Carl, No identifying plates/labels/etc are present. Components are from various makers. I was hoping someone with Mallory manual would be able to narrow it down for me utilizing the tube lineup.

Without a clue as to the manufacturer, a person would have to scan through a lot of pages in Mallory's in the hopes of coming up with a match.
Maybe someone can locate something in Larsen's Locator. I believe it lists radios by tube count?

Larsen's Locator is where I found the two Grigsby-Grunow listings. I did not see any listings with a 27 tube along with the other tubes in that line-up.

Maybe the 27 was a replacement? The 56 was available by this time and should have been used as the original tube. They are interchangeable in most cases.

Meade

Does a 56 show up instead of 27, listed with those other tubes?

Hi Norm, Bill,

Yes. In addition to the two I mentioned, on closer inspection of Larsen's Locator, I find 13 more radios with a 56 instead of a 27 in the line-up of 80, 47, 27, 55 and 58 (x3). Larsen did not list the radio model numbers, just the Rider's page for each radio. So, one has to refer to the Riders manual and page listed to find the model number (to be able to find it in Nostalgia Air's resource index for instance).

Those 13 radios are in 6 different Riders manuals so it will take a little time to look up and jot down the model numbers of all of them. One of them, A Macy model MB-710 in Riders 3-2 looks like a hopeful candidate for a "Bambergers" set. I will look up and list the others at a later date.

Bill,
Are you sure the oscillator is a 58?
The Freed Eisemann MB-7 was made for Macys-Bamberger, but the oscillator is a 56 - replacement for the 27:

I believe the Freed Eisemann schematic posted by Carl is the same as the Macy MB-710 I listed, only Carl's also has a tube layout chart.

Perhaps you guys are on to something... the Macy MB 710 and the Freed MB-7 seem very close to what I have. Unfortunately, the sockets on this set are not marked. The 47 and 27 sockets are spaced fairly closely though - I'm not sure anything physically bigger than a 27 would fit in there comfortably. Not having a schematic, I went ahead and recapped this thing by what was there - soemthing I don't like to do since there were plenty of old substitutions and work arounds from years past. The speaker that came with this set seem to be a sub too - it's 1 Kohm field coil whereas the schematic list 2500 ohm. Anyway, after recapping and redoing some sloppy old soldering - it works - and it works very well - sensitive & selective. But - there is something out there with a 27... I've had a "Hamilton Lloyd" set for some years that has the exact tube lineup as I originally listed for the Bomberger. It's a 1/2 scale console that I suspect was made for a department store too. It's tube sockets ARE marked and it has a 27 - although the physical layout is a near mirror image of the Bomberger - with right and left reversed. But, I think I have some good stuff to work with and I thank you guys for looking and finding it for me.
