HEATHKIT TC-1

hello. i have a heathkit tc-1 tube tester. the tester works. when i pull the switch down to test the tube, it pins the neddle. i replaced the capacitor and all the resistors and sub out the meter. it still does the same thing. pins the needle. any ideas?

Did you read the manual and set the tester up properly? Did you test the tube for shorts? You cannot test a shorted tube for emission. Does it do this with all the tubes you test? You may have something wired wrong, this is a simple tester and easy to trace the circuits using the schematic.

ALL I DID WAS REPLACE ALL THE RESISTORS AND THE CAP ONE BY ONE. THEY ARE ALL THE CORRECT VALUES. I DO NOT HAVE ANY INFO ON THE TESTER.I ALSO REPLACED THE SHORT LIGHT WITH THE CORRECT BULB.NOW IT PINS THE NEEDLE.ALL THE TUBES CHECK GOOD ON MY PRECISION 10-12.IM WORKING ON GETTING A MANUAL FOR IT.

GO here and download the manual for it.

The shorts bulb is a NE-51 neon bulb. Did the tester work before you repaired it?

Paul,
BAMA has a partial manual in DJVU format - no tube chart:

If you are not familiar with DJVU, read the bottom of the first page. A lot of guys use Irfanview.

Problems..problems...problems..right there in River City.

Soooo, with your mentioning of what parts were already involved, lets consult the attached and reformatted schematic of that unit.
If your unit now has the peter being megged...oops..my dyslexia kicking in again...thats meter being pegged, check out the yellow highlighted flow path for the line cal test and confirm that none of that loop was miss wired or had improper values of resistors installed by error.
Assuredly the large TC32 1000 ohm 25 watt line adj rheostat was not messed with ....right ?

Also was anything done with the TC 10 rectifier....like maybe a newer silicon diode replacing it, and with its less voltage drop, producing a concurrently higher output ?
Thats just about all there is involved to that individual testing aspect. If it was my my situation, I would now be subbing in a VOM and using its 10 or 50 Ma scale ranging , in order to then test again and see exactly what in excess of the prescribed max full scale of 1 ma is actually being present in that loop.

Now with a look at the short testing aspect (the highlighted fuscia loop) where you got to install "THE" capacitor in the unit. That is one point where you would want a higher voltage rated unit preferably, and ABSOLUTE minimal leakage in it. It grabs a static AC voltage level from the 100 VAC tap and provides DC isolation to then feed into the NE-51----NE-2 neon short indicator lamp. That lamp is using a resistive pre biasing arrangement to have it closer to its firing threshold, enhancing its short detection sensitivity. The testing line loop then passes on down to the function selector switch and passes on through its one involved contact, and then on down to one buss line on the bank of set up switches, which individually flip in for testing for any tube leakage / shorts.

Stopping for your evaluation and feedback.....

::Carl T:: : :ok. i reteaced the circut. its correct. the line adjust reads at 100 ohms. same as the other TC-1s i have. none of them work. ill keep going at it little by little and some day ill find the prob. thank you for the info.
