Can I use the 25.2V 2.0A transfomer from Radio Shack (part# 273-1512 instead of the 120:24V 1A?

Yes, it will run cooler at high current outputs, as long as the regulator chip is below its maximum input, which is, what 37 Volts?

The RS xfmr's secondary winding is center tapped. Just tape up the CT and leave unused.
