I recapped and checked all the tubes on this radio that I just purchased, the only issue is when the volume is turned up I get a screaching sound out of the speaker? Does any one know what could be causing this? There are 2 caps that I did not replace as of yet, perhaps it is one of them? There is no distortion at low volume.

Sounds like you're getting some kind of feedback - are all the tube shields in place? Wouldn't hurt to replace the remaining caps while you're at it...

Now that you mention it, one shield is missing, the one right over the 6B6 next to the power tube, is there something I can use if I dont have a shield?

That sounds like the right tube, all right. Try a piece of aluminum foil, make sure it is grounded to the chassis. That will at least tell you if you need to find a shield or not.

Agree with Lewis... try a temporary shield to see if that's a fix. If you can't find a shield, then possibly consider a metal 6B6 tube replacement.

Unfortunately the foil did not make a difference, but as long as it isnt turned up really high, there is no distortion or screech in am band but I just tried the shortwave and it is distorted with all stations, and I still have the screeching on the volume control. Is it possible to have clear am and distorted shortwave?

Dave finish recapping then check R4. There are two on the diagram. 990K ohm (or 990M as listed). Use 1Meg ohm. Make sure that the 85ohm and 250ohm sections of the cannedohm is not open. Then check the value of R3. This is for AVC feedback, a 490K. Let me know how it goes.
