I cannot find anything on this relic , i picked one up a couple of years back still in the crate. The couple i got it from had bought it 80 years ago and they used it once and it has never worked since they packed it back up and never took it back out. till i came across it and saw what the problem was. they sold it to me for 150.00 and i fixed it and bought new tubes for it. but then suddenly it stopped and all i hear is a hum. This radio is show room condition and i wont attempt to fix it until i get a couple more ideas on various problems it could be. when i had it playing it sounded better then anything you could buy today.

Hey Mike

Unplug your radio. It's humming that song "My Electrolytic capacitors, ain't no good". Their shown on the schematic of the 780x to the right of the 5y4G rectifier that's in your mailbox. Those caps 20uf/450v,15uf/400v,8uf/400v and the 20mfd/25v have to be replaced for starters. After that you can move on to the paper/wax caps. You might want to check out a primer on cap replacement on the Just Radio site.

http://www.justradios.com/captips.html

BTW your radio was made in 1939.

Regards
Ken

:............. as far as the paper wax caps go there is only one i see and its the 6sk7 r.f. amp. This is new looking other then some dust. The licensing for this radio goes back to 1928 as well as the bill of sale, but who knows , maybe they had another unit before this one. The funny thing is when i was there and he turned it on i saw a blue spark under it where the radio was sitting on the cord and i knew right away the cord was cut. after i got it i repaired the cord and it worked like new. He told me he sent it to montreal twice and they could never fix it. so it sat in the house all that time, go figure.

Hi Mike - I used to own one of those and have fixed several more just like it - I'm not sure from your post - were you able to get it going ? They are good radios with beautiful veneer in the cabinets - but not difficult to repair - let me know if you need anything - I think I have factory schematics on that one.

I havent had a chance to get to it. I am in the midst of getting all spare parts for it. Something that would be nice is an owners manual to replace the one that is missing from the envalope. If you have one that can be copied that would be nice :P.
