Need idea for alignment tool / where to find
8/2/2007 10:03:44 PMLarry Goldy
Does any on know where to find a fiber or none farris nut driver. I am working on a Philco 90 which requires a ¼ inch nut runner inorder to adjust alignment.

Tried to fashion something however I need to push hard and may break something or the plastic tool deforms or cracks when turning alignment caps.

Philco long time ago sold some kind of fiber wrench for this purpose however that was years ago and I had no luck in finding something comprible.

Larry,
Never having faced your problem, I have ideas that may help. (#1)Use a plexiglas/nylon rod, heat a 1/4" nut sufficiently to melt it's way into the rod end, and remove. Its best to have a screw in the nut for easy removal. (#2)Shrink several layers of "heat shrink" tubing around a 1/4" nut. (#3)Force a small section of thin wall brass/alum. tubing (available at hobby shops) down over a 1/4" nut, then encase in shrink tubing. The metal will have a small effect on the tuning, but can be compensated with a little practice.

Hmmm.... non-ferrous...ehhh...well I have a 6+ ft length of fiberglass staff from an old bicycle flag attachment...sans flag anymore !hi hi

So, if that was my situation to solve, I would be selecting the proper fiberglass / plastic shaft / etc. to be used and using one of the two part
Resin / Hardener epoxy family products for the co-joined "end cap" . Then take a machine screw with two, side by side,
concentrically aligned 1/4 in hex nuts placed at its very tip. Then you create a "mold release" isolation via a coating of the
cluster with grease / oil / silicone / PAM . Then you press them into the center of the formed epoxy end and let the
epoxy cure hard. That should result in a precise conformality to your mold pieces after they are then pulled free. Then do a final
trimming and a truing up to perfection.
