RCA14X help needed
7/30/2007 5:37:57 AMMeyer Rochwerger
Recently I bought a RCA 14X radio at ebay that's in good overall conditions.
After a good cleaning, I did recap it and it works fine in the MW band.
(I did not change the mica caps). But... nothing at SW.
I made some measures and found that it's not oscillating.
The grid (pin 5) reads 0 volts in SW and aproximately -6V in MW.
The AVC and +B voltages are normal.
I have another set with this same problem.

Any sugestion will be wellcome.
Thanks,
Meyer

Meyer,
If you haven't done it as part of the cleaning, try cleaning the bandswitch contacts. Also, check the value of R1. Sometimes just trying a different tube will work.

Hello Jim,
I allready cleaned the band switch, and ordered a new converter (12SA7). Meanwhile I'll check the value of R1 and then I'll give you a feedback.
Thanks,
Meyer

I've found R1 with 31k and replaced it by a new one 22k. I replace the two capacitors involved in the oscillating circuit C24(56pf) and C26(150pf). I try a few used 12SA7 tubes from my junk box and found one that gives a small negative voltage in the grid (5). The MW still working good, but with the SW I can pick some stations with scratchy sound. I think that the cure is a new converter tube. So, I'll wait till it cames to give you a definitive feedback (I hope).

Hi Meyer,

Have you checked the alignment?

Gary
