Problem - Radios with AVC/ALC erratic volume level
7/16/2007 12:45:39 AMke9zm
I seem to have the same problem on three of my older radios. Once you set the volume using the volume control, the volume level becomes erratic. For a period of time, perhaps 3 minutes it has one volume level, and then it changes again.

Just wondering if this is a common problem - a failing cap or tube.

Thanks
Gary / ke9zm

The only thing I can think of to do right now is to put a VTVM or high resistance (11 Meg) Voltmeter across the AVC and watch it for changes. At least you will know if the problem is RF or AF.

Hi Gary and Lewis,
Does the same thing happen on strong or weak stations? If it is the same it is an indication of a problem in the audio section.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Your AVC Voltage will differ with signal strength. The stronger the station, the more negative the AVC. If you see the AVC change when the speaker audio does, then you have troubles before the audio section. I don't have a specific model to read the schematic on, but this should hold true for any superhet radio, regardless of who made it.

The trouble you describe is most likely either due to a dirty volume control or an arcing/spuratically leaky capacitor.

Hmmmmmmmm..............or is it spurratically? ....or sporatically? There are many different spellings of the word.

None of the above...its ....sporadically......or the easy way out might be satisfied with..... erratically.

Edd, what is that jaggedy blue line supposed to represent? I much prefer my bouncing electron (which I keep forgetting to use):

Sir Douglas:

In my case, I was merely using it for a distinct divisional marker between posts...plus being able to locate my posts text in a jumbled up sequential series of posts in a string.
With some post replies popping up at the top and others at the bottom. Its sometimes HARD to even differentiate WHO said
what on very short replies ?

Also, the use of an internal shadow frame also works, but its decreasing of available line length , sometimes clips text short, and automatically
throws in some abrupt, unwanted CR's.

Previously, I was just using a plain line with a centered BT (break in text) prior to that, but the additional colorization is an asset.

As for "What is that jaggedy blue line supposed to represent ?".......Wel l l l l l...when I look at it....it reminds me of the display on a RF Spectrum Analyzer
when you have the gain cranked up to about 140 db and are watching the bottom of the display and the activity of the "grass" on the base
lines O db noise level floor.

The one that you opted for...equally / or.... reminds me of either, a recurrent electron beam path in its creation of a trace of a waveform on a scope
faceplate...orrrr...the bowling ball mentioned elswhere in another post.

Overall, there seems to be a multitude of options
!

Hey, that's what I thought===Looked like sweeping an AT&T microwave---good frequency response, but NOISEEEEEEEE.

Lewis

Now I'll try one again;

Edd,

Don't remove your squiggly line - been using it to clean between the plates of tuning caps.
