When the "STUPID BUG" bites.....
7/4/2007 8:46:07 PMPeter G Balazsy
I write this as I recover from a severe case of "stupid-bug" poising.

I've been restoring this little 1938 Airline 62-351 with an odd shaped curved case and preset station levers and a tuning knob sticking out of the right side.

After all the electronic restore and chassis cleanup I had to re-create the entire dial scale and dial window lense etc.

Anyway ....I was having some difficulty getting everything back into the case properly and had to reposition it several times...arrrgh.

Finally I get it all back together and it plays nicely and then I realise I forgot to take photos of the chassis... arrrgh again!

Soo I take it all apart again... set up my lights.. get my camera, start taking pictures.. and wouldn't you know it?... the battery quits... arrrgh!.. again.

Okay that's why I keep a spare battery all charged..

Good OK..put in the charged battery and start to recharge the dead one... Good... ok.. back in business.

Finish taking pictures... put the unit back in the cabinet again once or twice to get it just right.

Power up and it seems NOW to only play reasonably well on the very strong stations ...but there's a non-60 hz hum now.
.... Well no, not really a hum but rather ....a Buzz-Saw hum!!!
Arrrgh again. Now what.???

I figured I must have bent something putting it together or a chassis screw is too long touching something.
Ok.. take it all apart AGAIN.... Arrrgh.

I tried moving wires that were near suspicious things. I rearranged the wires by the oscillator coil and the buzz-saw got even LOUDER...
What is going on here??? ARRRRGh.

I tune around the dial and confirm strong stations are ok but the whole upper part of the AM band is just BUZZing like a chain saw!!!

I figured it was not 60 hertz but more like 100 or 200hz or something like that.
I thought maybe somehow something is shorting and causing an oscillation somehow in here!.. ARRGGGGH.. again..

Now here's the revelation part.

There comes a time ....well after the "stupid-bug" has bitten you when the the initial "stupid venom" that was blocking your reasoning brain cells completely... when that begins to fade... you start to make a little progress toward real logical synapses again...

AND so... I could start to feel that creeping over my feeble brain now.

THEN... like a bolt out of the blue ....combined with hope...
I suddenly cross my fingers and I take a walk over to the camera battery charger and pull the plug.
The BUZZING stops!!... lol

ARRRRRGH ... and WHEW!...

Worse than MURPHY... watch out for the stupid bug.

Thanks Peter, It's comforting to hear other accounts of the kind of things I do all the time. Makes me feel a little more normal.

Peter,
Murphy's rule #1!!! IF SOMETHING CAN HAPPEN, IT WILL!!!!. I find myself laying down a tool, maybe something special that I set aside for a specific use, and 15 minutes later when I reach for it, not there. Then I go into the "panic mode", so I mentally retrace all my previous steps, and suddenly another "Senior Moment" reveals itself.

7/5/2007 10:28:45 AMBob (with only one o)
I have this "Total Idiot Bug" I think it is nearly
the same DNA as the Stupid bug but its venom is twice as deadly. It afflicts me whenever I sit down and try
to restore a radio. Well...not every time.
Still a "newbie" after 2 years but still trying.

With all of your exacting detail...down to the part of...

"Good OK..put in the charged battery and start to recharge the dead one... Good... ok.. back in business. "

And then, with your "experiencing " of severe QRN on the receiver, a bit later.
Now that immediately tipped me off to the problem being the rich harmonic content of spurious emissions /RF harmonics radiating from that chargers Switch Mode Power Supply.

Should you try a quite depleted battery in it and take note of its "whine" on the receiver and then plug in a more fully charged unit, you should be able to differentiate between the two sounds, as the pulse width modulation timing created will be different in the two different charge rates produced.

In ALL probability, the unit is being enclased in merely a plastic or polycarbonate housing...with no shielding, such as would be provided with a metal housing..... or even having a spray on RFI coating within that non metallic housing.

HEYYYY.....BTW....where's our pictures ?

Edd:
I wrote it in that sequence to drop a hint as to what I was overlooking... and ...That's why I felt I was so stupid... Especially since I already know ...and have known for a very long time that THAT charger emits such vile RF.
This particular charger is an "after market" Chinese model I think.
But the original Minolta (Jap?)charger does not make the same RF noise.
They are both plastic.. but I didn't look inside the original one to see how they shield it.
And...Yes the noise changes and/or reduces when the battery becomes more fully charged.
Pictures??
You mean of this finished Airline 62-351 chassis?
Okay here they are but the case is still waiting to be painted.
