Wiring Question
7/2/2007 3:56:55 PMRick Churray
Hello,
I recently purchased a 1942 Zenith Tabletop radio. You can view it at http://phonoold1.tripod.com/Zenith_6D612.html

The chassic has several wire in need replacement or covering with heat shrink as it is very brittle and cracked in laces.

Will heat shrinking the old wiring work well?
Should I just replace the wiring?

Or are there any suggestions?
Thanks
Rick

Rick - to install heat shrink, you'd have to disconnect one end of each wire - but it should work fine.

Might be better to just replace each segment of wire that is bad?
Doug

Rick, I agree with Doug, you will be going to about the same amount of trouble either way, so why not just do it properly?

Doug and Lewis,
Thanks for the help. I will probably replace the wiring that I can. So of the brittle, cracked wiring comes from tuning coils so I may have to heat shrink them.
What about gauge?? Do I need to maintain the same gauge or will todays wiring be of a lighter gauge? Is there a web sit which sells wiring for antique radios?

Thanks
Rick

Just about any reasonable gauge would be OK, 22 probobly is easiest to work with, and is probably what they used in the first place.

check www.radiodaze.com or www.tubesandmore - they are sources for wire. I've been using #20 solid, lacquered cloth-covered wire from RadioDaze. I would recommend the unrated version - the 600-V rated wire is too thick, I think.
