Philco 42-380 speaker

I am trying to help a lady restore her Philco 24-380 radio. The speaker is missing. Are these parts available? Is is possible to use a new permanent manget speaker and replace the electromagnet with a choke cois and what value?

James, Gonna assume it's really a 42-380. If so, you can substitute a power resistor, or combination of resistors to replace the speaker field coil (1100 ohms). Then you can use a PM speaker. Do you have the output transformer? If not, check back and we'll figure a substitute for that also. You might also post a request on some of the forums to see if anyone might have a spare. Good luck

I have found a schematic on-line and it looks like everything that was connected to the chassis is still intact. The output transformer is mounted inside the chassis. The filter caps have been changed and there is some wiring that has been altered. I will check and see what has been altered. I appreciate the info on the coil impedance. At least I know what value to start with if I have to use a resistor. Any idea on the wattage? I will pass this information on and see what she wants to do.

Subbing a resistor for a field coil works ok but the resistors need to be able to dissipate a lot of heat. If you have room, how about two 500 ohm 10 watt resistors and one 100 ohm 5 watt, all in series. Mount them securely with as much air space around them as possible. Good luck

Greetings,

I have an extra speaker that will work for your 42-380 if you do not do the above. Please contact me at edselbabe@silvercastlejewelry.com for details.
