RCA 56X Popping, then works
6/8/2007 10:28:31 PMBruce Walters
ok, the set didnt work. Then I replaced the filter caps and when I first turn on the set, it pops like a rapid fire pop gun. In checking voltages, i noticed that putting a probe on pin 8 of the 12SK7, stopped the racket but the radio didnt work. I figured it must have been capacitance of the probe so I put a .01mfd cap on pin 8 for just a quick touch and bingo, the set works fine until turned off. Then it starts all over after the set cools. I would guess this is some weird bias issue or something, but I need some idess how to find this. On a more serious note, I injured my left elbow replacing my water heater today, and now I can't hold a 12 ounce bottle of beer with that arm. Will Light Beer help with this problem?

You are getting feedback of sorts, or oscillation. Touching the plate of the 12SK7 stops the oscillation. My radio (identical to your's) goes into a sort of oscillation at times, too. Turning the radio off and on a couple of times, or touching one of the antenna terminals, fixes the problem. Sometimes it comes back. The set has all of its original condensers except the filters. It would be a wise idea for you to replace all of your condensers, and make sure that you are using metal tubes. Leaky condensers can cause tubes to do all sorts of things that they shouldn't. A leaky AVC condenser can be especially troublesome. Someday I'll replace all of the condensers in my set, but right now I'm too lazy, and it usually works fine.

Thanks Thomas, I have one glass tube that could be replaced with a metal tube. I think I will try that first just for the leasson it might teach. Either way, it is all original caps except for the fitlers now, so I will also do that soon. Thanks again.

35L6, 12J5, and 35Z5 can all be glass. All others should be metal. Your trouble is most likely due to condensers, though. Check them first.

About the beer: If you can get Miller High Life and put it on the top shelf of your book case you could use siphon action to solve your problem.

As I look at the schematic for a 56X I see some model change notes on the 2nd page relating to a 220k resistor across the primary of the 1st IF xformer concerning IF amplifier stability. And a few other changes.

Thanks to all, I already had the metal tubes, but by replacing some caps, the set works great. Before replacing the caps, I took two Aleve and it didn't fix the radio, however, I was able to pick up a 12 ounce bottle of Guiness with the injured arm. So,no problem.
