Question About Speaker Magnet Size?
6/4/2007 7:00:26 PMDoug Criner
Dave recently posted a thread about his battery-powered Philco with great sound that had a speaker with a big magnet.

How does a larger magnet affect speaker performance? I can visualize how it might improve speaker efficiency. But wouldn't frequency response be the same?

Another, related, question. What about speaker cone size? Larger speakers have better bass response. What else?

I imagine that the larger magnet is just one of the better components that is in the whole speaker, maybe a heavier cone for less distortion, stronger frame, etc, etc., the same for larger cone size, they would use better materials in a 8" speaker than a 4". In other words, if you spend 2X dollars for a speaker, you get a better speaker all around that an X dollar speaker.
Discussion, anyone?

Doug,
I suggest that "great sound" is purely subjective. What might sound good to my tin ears, may well be mass distortion to another. In addition, pride in a well done rebuild might also color ones opinion. In the vacuum tube days, Philco was known for its high quality sets, whether console or table top, and I'm sure this one is no exception. In the last couple years, I've restored a Philco bakelite, Majestic 90B console, Edison 7R (with hand built cone, but no cabinet), RCA 16T2 and RCA 67V1. My first Philco radio/phono console with a 12 incher is in the mill, and if its lives up to it's name, it'll "sound great"
