Telefunken Gavotte 5691 Very very distorted sound
5/24/2007 2:56:07 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All.
This is another wierd problem. When I connect the emitter resistor I get beautiful sound for about 1 second. Then it decays into very low volume and very distorted sound. If I then disconnect the resistor momentarily I get beautiful sound for about a second and again it decays into distortion in about a second.
I have tried different emitter resistors, different speaker transformers, checked every resistor I could find in that circuit and there are no open resistors, no open speaker transformer windings. This is crazy. The transistor is a WEP 232 aka ECG 104 or NTE 104.
I replaced as many paper and filter capacitors as I could find in this radio. I also replaced the diode bridge in the power supply, and the problem continues to persists no matter what I can think of trying. What should I try next? I'm ready to give up. Should I replace the transistor? It seems good to me.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Again,
It fooled me. It was the transistor. I used a 2N176, which also cross references to NTE 104.

I solved this faster than anyone could make a comment. But the question and answer is here for future reference.

I'm using a diode bridge made out of four 1N4007s. Do I need a dropping resistor or is it ok to use it without one? It seems to work fine.

Thanks,

Dave
