Asbestos?

I am in the process of cleaning up a GE H634 and found what appears to be a thin sheet of asbestos lining the bottom of the case (the chassis sits on it). Does anyone know what this material is? Should I discard it and, if so, with what should it be replaced? Thanks very much! :)

Hi Rob, The material probably is asbestos used to keep heat off the cabinet. It's a severe carcinogen when the fibres are inhaled, they are extremely stable with little barbs that can stay in the lungs for ever, perhaps causing mesothelioma decades later. Depending on its condition you can leave it, perhaps painting it with something to prevent any loose fibres from being released or you can remove it, wrap it in plastic and dispose of it. It can be replaced with one of the modern insulating materials that's not hazadous or if the heat's not too bad be left off, particularly if the set's mainly displayed and only used occasionally. Good Luck, Don Black.
