Marantz 10B Tuner
5/1/2007 3:56:59 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
Exactly how good is this tuner? I will soon have the opportunity to examine one of these. Do these have trouble with filter capacitors or are they too new for that?
Do these normally need periodic maintenance other than tube replacement when necessary? The person who owns it is saying that it needs to be aligned often. I don't know very much about this set but if it's as good as the collectors claim, it doesn't seem like it would need alignments very often. When I see it I'll find out what the built-in oscilloscope is for. Maybe it has it's own built-in alignment or calibration circuitry.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave - that tuner has a cult following and would be interesting.

At >40 years old, the original electrolytic caps will be suspect. The film caps may be mylar, and OK. Resistors may have drifted up in value.

I haven't been tempted to buy a tube-type tuner, so I have no direct experience. Decent solid-state tuners serve my purpose, the way I listen to the radio.

Wel l l l...looks like you are now going to get into something else of the technical stature of your previous National Criterion.
That Marantz, having the additional feature of a display scope. Now if that were my set and that feature is not already an ON DEMAND function, I certainly would make it so by capability of disabling of the CRT's fil supply unless the display is actually being required....and not eye candy.
(That is one RARE and PRICEY little CRT...... IF you can even get one anymore.)

Additionally, there have been some issues, with the very earlier versions, use of IF pot cores versus magnetization / tuning shift even a touchy temp stabilization before alignment .This probably exacerbated by the owners referencing to the units performance via observation on the scope and being pickey...pickey..pickey.
And no, there are no built in ref generators or BITE features.

Thanks Edd,
I may not get into it right away but I will probably see it soon.
