I have a radio that says aja electonics on the front and type 5842 on back. On the front it says made in germany-west. It was my grandfathers who I know was in world war 2 and brought it home from germany. I was wondering if any one could help me with a production date and value if any the unit works fine.

Harry, these sets generally have more information on the back, sometimes even the date as I recall. Sometimes a model name is on the radio? Sounds like a post WWII radio. Any other info post it and hopefully someone around here can help even if it's German.

Thankyou for the reply I just got done looking over the entire radio there is no other writing on it or inside at all except a serial number on the back. it is a table top model about 10 " wide 2ft long and 14" high a wood cabinet with 3 push buttons in front on left that say speech solo orchestra and push buttons in front along the bottom that say off fm am sw ph and the last one is the number 2 with a speaker next to it. it has a total of 4 speakers 2 in front and 2 on the side. thanks for any help you could give

OK, let's start with a few questions. Can you get the tube lineup? does the label say the operating Voltage and frequency? Can you tell if it has a power transformer? If it works in the USA, that would be odd, for European appliences generally work on 240V. 50 HZ., but it could have a selector switch in the transformer primary if it isn't a AC-DC model.

When you gave me the tube lineup, I wondered what you had, with all those tubes you had in it, but a little work gave me the following, I think:

ECH81 is the European number for a 6AJ8
EABC80 is the European number for a 6AK8
ECC85 is the European number for a 6AQ8
EF89 is the European number for a 6DA6

b250c75n2 makes no sense whatever.

ok on the back it says for ac only 115 volts 60c/s fuse 1 amp made in germany-west.

That sounds like it was made for export to the US.

Sounds like a German made radio around 1960 for export. If we only could get a manufacturer.

Harry, I believe the EM85 tube puts the radio in the 50's. Is the FM 88-108? Did your Grandfather spend more time in the service than WWII.

Harry,
I think the model 5842 was the one I had and tried to restore a while back. As I remember the tale, the AJA's were made up of components purchased by a German businessman after the original company went belly-up in the 1950's. They were assembled and marketed to the U.S. somewhere in the 1958-1960 range. The original company was a well known and respected German radio firm. AJA (or something similar)may have been the original name, but the 115 volt sets, as far as I was able to determine, were assembled strictly for the "foreign" market, and not something the original firm undertook.

Well Harry with that distinguished service he must have been a career man or called back to active duty a few times. He probably grabbed another tour in Germany along the way. But barring any other info I think your radio is from the 50's.
