I have a 1946 8G005 that I partially restored (recapped). And while it works it has an occasional problem. When listening to it for 15-20 minutes, the station crackles and gets soft. Tuning it in does not help nor does turning the volume up. What fixes it is pushing a SW band button and then the AM button again. Any ideas?

Dirty band switch contacts. At least that was the problem on one I just did. Try placing a drop of cleaner on the contacts one at a time, and working the switch back and forth. You may want to avoid spraying the stuff. I'ts kinda crowded in there and you don't want to get it on the coils. Can cause problems.

If cleaning the band switch doesn't do it, continue with your recapping job. I've had radios that acted up in similar fashion and it seems that moving the band switch would bring about a temporary fix. Turned out to be paper capacitors failing. Mark from Kalamazoo

I replaced all of the caps so I will clean the contacts. Thanks.
