I have a very unusual request. My wife is the executor of her aunt's estate. One of her aunt's working (62 years - Wow!) antique radios that she purchased in 1939-1940 was a 1940 Zenith Console Radio/Shortwave Radio. We even have a dated picture of her standing next to it when it was delivered. Would you know anything about the radio? How many were produced? Any special features or pre-war articles on it? What it originally sold for? Its current fair market value?
1940 Zenith Console Radio/Shortwave Radio
Model 1207 (No. 102-34D) - Mahogany Tiger Burl
12S; 12 tubes; 3 bands
I found a picture of the model in an old book called The Complete Price Guide to Antique Radios: Pre-War Consoles by Mark V. Stein; page 229 with an estimated value of $3,500 from some years ago. The book also states that it is known in the collectibles trade as the 'Darth Vader' and is one of the most prized collectible Zenith Radios. My wife will either have to sell it for far less at an estate sale in the next 2 weeks or take the fair market value of the radio into consideration if one of the beneficiaries would like it as part of their distribution of the estate. This Zenith radio is something special and is not something that you can find on Ebay or the internet in order to determine a fair market value.
While the pushbuttons work on the radio, the tuning dial does not move. Could you recommend an antique radio restorer for this model if one of the beneficiaries would like to make it fully functional? How do you pre-set the pushbuttons to other radio stations?
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
