Majestic model 100 audio out stage drive xformer?
3/30/2007 12:15:21 AMSteve Gray
I'm stuck with this rebuild, have an open center tap on secondary of oupput stage drive transformer and the thing is encapsulated in metal box full of thick hard tar or I'd already be in it unwinding the coils to find where the c.t. lead was broken, as the secondary from end to end has continuity. Any body know any "trick" to get rid of the tar??? Or short of that a used drive xformer to drive a pair of 45's...or a source of a new replacement type that I can hide in theold ones' box?? ANY help at this point would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

You can soak it in gasoline, mineral spirits, or put it in the oven (possibly outside?).

New transformers are available at www.tubesandmore.com

You will be pleased. It's a fine radio. You'll be even more pleased if you replace the hard rubber surround on the speaker either with a new cloth/rubber surround, or foam rubber, or suede, which is what I used.

I also put in a negative feedback circuit. The audio is great. I have the 181, but I'm using '45 tubes now, and the power supply I made supplies voltage appropriate for a model 100. Let me know how the square plate detector works at low volumes.

Steve,
I used low heat, about 250 degrees in an oven (electric, NOT microwave) to disengage a bunch of condensers from their can on a G/G Majestic 90B. Remove the phenolic/fish paper (or whatever) base plate from the can, and you may even find the break in plain site, just under it. I did on an Edison 7R power transformer. Set the can inside an aluminum disposable pan with deep sides, and spacers to allow the contents egress. The time it takes
(30 min to 1 hr) will be dependent on the consistency of the tar/pitch inside. USE EXTREME CAUTION in handling after heated (use mitts or protective gloves), because the melted tar/pitch will stick to your skin, causing severe burns.
