Pay phone rewiring for home use
3/19/2007 11:48:26 PMDavid
Hello, I know this is not about radios, but I thought you could help. I recently bought an AT&T mid 1980's pay phone and wanted to know how to rewire it to use at home in my basment game room.
Thanks
David

I don't know exactly how to by-pass the coin thingie but that part must just be a simple switch which you can force on.

Otherwise just connect the red-wire and the green-wire (that is called "tip" and "ring" for the two end parts of an old-style jack/plug for a switchboard ) to your wall outlet.
Depending on the age and type of the dial mechanism.. ( rotary or tone) you may need to reverse those two wires if the tone buttons don't work.

Otherwise that's all there is to it usually.

This site has some telephone schematics, including a coin box, as they call them. I worked for Ma Bell for five years, I might can help you decode the schematic. You might have to do some rewiring. My work was mostly with carrier, I worked mostly on Co-axial and microwave usually with 600 circuits at a time, so my knowlege of two wire circuits is more of less limited.
