Tone generator

Hi: I have an AN/URM 25D signal generator. I am attempting to learn how to use it. Can it be used to act as a Tone Generator to test radio circuits? I have a few radios and hope to repair them. I read that by using a tone generator and starting with the antenna input to the 1st RF that a signal can be produced to check the circuitry. Any suggestions on a good book or procedure to accomplish this? Thanks for the help.
