old transtor

Got a 1958 vintage car that has a nomfuctional trans radio.Got the schematic but I know less about transtors than I do about real radios. These are 2Nxxx
and Google did not find a source or sub. With the old style case suppose they have not been made in years.
Please help if anyone has a possible source.Is the
transistor the usual cause of trouble? Would it be best to try getting another set of that era to salvage parts?
Would like the set repaired - not modified- anyone
know of a reliable service?
Thanks
Bob

2NXXX covers nearly a thousand transistors. Can you be more specific?

Hi Bob,

2N278=NTE330 (pnp germanium audio amp)
2N150=NTE101 (npn germanium rf-if amp)
2N149=NTE103A (npn germanium audio amp)
2N217=NTE102A (npn germanium rf-if amp)
R-62=NTE103A (npn germanium audio amp)
R-64= NTE102A (npn germanium rf-if amp)

Google "NTE Semiconductor" for replacement transistors. Be prepared for a shock when checking the price of the NTE330.

You may be better off picking up another radio for parts, but I suspect the early all transistor Caddy radio may be hard to find and rather pricey also.

For servicing, Hemmings magazine has many auto radio repair places listed.

Hi Bob

Transistors are probably not the cause of your problem. These radios used a lot of electrolytic caps. They dry out and fail over time.

If you do need transistors they are available.

2N278 = ECG330
2N150 = ECG101
2N149 = ECG103A
2N117 = ECG123AP
R-62 = ECG101
R-64 = ECG102A

The 2N117 should have been 2N217 = ECG102A.

ECG and NTE are the same.

If a Delco transistor #7276207 will save you the forty bucks or so for an NTE 330,I have one in my junk box you can have. It is a germanium I found years ago, and it has some rust on it but it is a GM transistor made by Delco, looks like a NTE 330, has been sitting in my junk box so long,I have totally forgotten where I got it. If it will fix your radio, you can have it. E-mail me at linsonl@bellsouth.net and I will mail it to you. Delco made the Inertial Navigation Systems we used on transatlantic flights in those days, It might be a part of that.
