Any advice for Zenith 10H20Z with Record Changer Project?
1/21/2007 11:50:59 AMBob Elbert
I started a new project. Everything is disassembled and awaiting TLC. Top of Radio Chassis looks pretty cruddy but should clean up. All parts seem to be there. Being a novice and this console project being a first, does anyone have any advice, warnings, tips, etc. that may benefit me. This was given to me by a friend who evidently wants to keep me busy in the basement for awhile. In the schematic I see references to specific caps where they say "two used".
I have not looked closely at the wiring yet but wondered what this was about. I have 15 pages of schematic, parts, etc information which is great. Any
advice on restoring the Record changer would especially be beneficial ie, what to clean, lube, check, etc. I am sure I will have specific questions when I get into the deep of it. :O) Bob

Hi Bob
Well for the record changer, clean all motor bearings, I use Rubbing Alcohol, and oil with 3 IN 1 Oil, also oil the felt washers. Clean and grease all gears and moving linkage I use White Turntable Lithium Grease. Clean all speed Spindles, I use Rubbing Alcohol for that, Oil them with the 3 IN 1. Depending on the shape of the belts, either clean them or replace them with new ones, as well clean the Idler Tire or replace it if it is badly worn. That should take care of the mechanics of the changer, as far as the Needle and Cartridge use your own judgement on those. Thats about it for the changer.
Now on too the Radio Chassis, obviously clean it up, check all tubes, replace all capacitors except for the Mica's they usually don't go bad very often, check and replace any resisitors that are out of tolerance, then fire it up to determine if an alignment is needed, hope this helps:)

Yes thanks! That will help a lot. Those are the kind of things I was wanting to hear about.
Where do you find:
White Turntable Lithium Grease
Idler Tire (if needed)
Belts, replace them with new ones (if needed)

This post got "resurrected" I guess. I have finished with this project and it is working fairly well. In fact, I bought another just like it. (glutton for punishment at the right price :o) But I do not see me
working on it for quite awhile. It is a nice unit and I like it because it is the only unit I have that will play 78s albeit not that good but they play :O)
