Use a transistor to test the oscillator section

I have used a transistor held near the radio to test the oscillator. Turn the test radio to an area where there is no audio then tune the transistor and hope to hear a squeal in the test radio.

Del,

You must be talking about a transistor radio, and not just the transistor itself. I have used AM/FM transistor radios to locate sources of interference in a similar manner as you described for checking the osc.

Using a second radio is a good way to check an oscillator. The second radio should have a signal the IF frequency above where the first radio is tuned. If the first radio is tuned to 1000 and the IF frequency is 455 the second radio will pick up a signal at 1455.
